Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi made a new appeal to Italians to continue being vaccinated during the standard press conference shortly before the end of the year. “I urge citizens to take the third dose of the vaccine. “Three-quarters of deaths and hospital admissions are for the unvaccinated. It is dramatic,” said the Italian technocratic prime minister. He added that based on the new epidemiological data, tomorrow his government will re-evaluate the need for new restrictions. “Tests should be increased, as should the vaccination of children,” he said, adding that “compulsory vaccination of the entire population is not immediately relevant, but has not been ruled out.”
Support for Italian households
Regarding the increase in the price of energy, Draghi made it clear that his government is ready to take new measures to support the country’s households. However, he asked the energy production and distribution companies to contribute in this direction.
Referring to internal developments, he stressed that “the conditions are already in place to continue the implementation of Italy’s recovery and flexibility plan”, but “the important thing is that the government is supported by a large majority”. According to many observers, this is also interpreted as an opening of the technocratic prime minister to accept the candidacy for the presidency of the republic, as the successor of Sergio Matarella. Voting in the Italian parliament and senate will begin in early February. “I am in the service of the institutions, as a citizen and a grandfather,” Draghi added. At the same time, however, he wanted to send the message that nothing has been decided yet. “I do not plan the future either inside or outside the state institutions. “What matters is that we live intensely in the present,” he told reporters.
Optimism for the new year
The head of the Italian government seems optimistic about the reform of the European Stability Pact, with the prospect of reaching an agreement as early as next year. He also believes that Europe understands the need for a new approach to refugees and migrants, with an emphasis on humanitarian issues, as well as voluntary repatriations.
Finally, referring to Libya, Mario Draghi stated that “Italy and Europe have made every effort to accompany the process of strengthening the Republic and we will continue our work. The landscape is definitely not uniform. Some mercenaries were repatriated, but there was no significant withdrawal of Russian and Turkish forces. In this regard, we have only had some results with regard to Turkey. “What we hope for now is a new date for the elections, with a series of consultations.”
