In Ukraine, Russia is fighting NATO, says a close Putin ally

Patrushev argued that the Westerners aim to disintegrate Russia

One of President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies said today that Russia is now fighting the US-led NATO military alliance in Ukraine and that the West is trying to break Russia up and eventually eliminate it from the political map of the world.

“The events in Ukraine are not a conflict between Moscow and Kiev. It is a military confrontation between Russia and NATO and above all the US and Britain,” said the secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev.

“The West’s plans are to continue disintegrating Russia and eventually simply erase it from the political map of the world,” Patrushev told the newspaper Argumenti i Fakti.

Patrushev, a former Soviet agent who has known Putin since the 1970s, is a staunch ally and is seen as one of the few people who can influence the Russian president.

Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine sparked one of Europe’s bloodiest conflicts since World War II and the biggest standoff between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.
