The c.g. of NATO reiterated that Turkey has “legitimate security concerns” and added that “no other NATO Ally has suffered from terrorism more than Turkey”

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed the certainty that Turkey will ratify the accession protocol of Finland and Sweden during a joint press conference with EU President Charles Michel and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. after the signing of the EU-NATO joint declaration.

Asked to comment on Turkey’s requirements to ratify the accession protocol of Finland and Sweden, Jens Stoltenberg said he was confident that the accession process would be completed and that Turkey, like Hungary, would ratify it. He reiterated once again that Turkey has “legitimate security concerns” and added that “no other NATO Ally has suffered from terrorism more than Turkey.”

G. Stoltenberg emphasized that the accession process of Finland and Sweden is the fastest in the modern history of NATO. He reminded that the two countries submitted a request for accession in May, while in July in Madrid the 30 member states of the Alliance invited the two countries to join and today the accession protocol of the two countries has been ratified by 28 of the 30 NATO member states . He also recalled that in July in Madrid an agreement was signed between Turkey, Finland and Sweden, based on which the two candidate countries agreed to lift restrictions on arms exports – which was done – and work to fight terrorism , which is being done and there is “close cooperation to address it”.

Continuing, G. Stoltenberg emphasized that the two Scandinavian countries have received bilateral security guarantees from some member states, including the USA. He also added that NATO has strengthened its presence in the region and that it is “unthinkable” for the two countries to face a military threat without the Alliance’s reaction.

He said, finally, that the EU-NATO partnership will become even more important when Finland and Sweden become full members of NATO.
