“It’s a new attempt on my life,” added the vice president, who was also targeted in 2019 when she was still an environmental activist.

Colombia’s Vice President Francia Marquez, the first Afro-Colombian woman to hold that office in the country’s history, announced today that her bodyguards have foiled an assassination attempt.

In a post on Twitter, Marquez said there had been a “controlled detonation” of a bomb containing more than 7 kilograms of explosives that had been placed on the road leading to her family’s home in the village of Yolobo, Cauca province, where she was to go and the same.

“It’s a new attempt on my life,” added the vice president, who was also targeted in 2019, when she was still an environmental activist. Then she had been attacked with a grenade and a rifle, in the same province.

According to the police report, the improvised explosive device consisted of “an ammonium nitrate-based explosive substance” that also contained aluminum powder and nails.

Her security officials were informed of the presence of “suspicious persons” and “strange objects” on the road leading to the village.

Francia Marquez is the vice president of the first left-wing government in the history of Colombia that has launched an ambitious ceasefire initiative with all the armed organizations operating in the country. “We will not stop working, day after day, until we achieve the Complete Peace that Colombia dreams of and that we need. We will not abandon this plan until we can live in real harmony in all regions” of the country, she stressed in her post.
