The uranium was in a cargo of scrap ore
The British police announced on Tuesday that they are conducting an investigation after finding and confiscating the package it contained uranium at London Heathrow Airport.
The material was located on December 29thduring a routine check by members of the Border Guard, police said.
According to a report by British tabloid The Sun, which was the first to report on the seizure, the package came from Pakistan and arrived at England by aircraft that took off from Oman.
The uranium was in a cargo of scrap ore and officers investigating are looking into the possibility that there was “wrong handling” of the — potentially lethal — material in Pakistan, the BBC reported.
“I want to reassure the public: the amount of radioactive material was extremely small” and experts “concluded that there is no danger” to the British, police chief Richard Smith told the press.
“Although our investigation is ongoing, the package does not appear to be linked to any immediate threat,” he added.
