Members of the Republican Party on Wednesday (11) asked George Santos to resign from his seat in the House of Representatives. The action is led by members of the New York party, the state in which the son of Brazilians was elected.
The request follows the revelation of a series of inconsistencies in the politician’s trajectory, ranging from lies about his resume, incomplete or inaccurate statements about his finances, and even falsehoods about his religion – he, who is Catholic, lied about being Jewish and descendants of Holocaust survivors.
Santos is already under investigation by federal and local prosecutors looking into potential criminal activity in his two congressional campaigns. Prosecutors said that the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro intends to reopen an investigation that dates back to 2008 – at the time, he was indicted for embezzlement after stealing a checkbook and using it to make purchases.
