“There is no justification for the current size of the Russian embassy,” Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a statement.
Estonia announced today the expulsion of 21 Russian diplomats and other employees of the Russian embassy in order to “equalize” the diplomatic staff of the two countries in Tallinn and Moscow respectively.
“There is no justification for the current size of the Russian embassy,” Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a statement.
The number of positions in the embassies of Russia and Estonia will now be equal, the ministry said.
Russia’s diplomatic delegation in Tallinn will thus be reduced to eight diplomats and 15 members of administrative, technical and support staff.
Those being deported must leave Estonia by the end of the month.
Last April, Russia ordered the closure of Estonia’s consulates in St Petersburg and Pskov and declared their staff “persona non grata”.
Moscow took this decision after the three Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, expelled Russian diplomats after the invasion of Ukraine.
