Turkey: New lawsuit for mismanagement against Ekrem Imamoglu

The mayor of Istanbul is accused of mismanagement in a tender held in 2015

New lawsuit against the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglou the Ministry of the Interior of Turkey testified, as reported by the SKAI correspondent, Manolis Kostidis.

According to what has become known, this is a case from 2015, which concerned a tender that was cancelled. The Turkish Ministry of Interior accuses Ekrem Imamoglou of mismanagement, as, as he claims, the current mayor of Istanbul did not accept an objection filed at that time.

In December he was sentenced to 2 years and 7 months in prison and deprivation of civil rights. He had been found guilty of “insulting” members of the Electoral Commission, whom he called “idiots” for nullifying his victory in the 2019 local elections. The election was repeated three months later and he was again victorious, by a significant margin over the ruling party’s candidate AKP.

Haberturk newspaper reported today that a new lawsuit was filed against Imamoglu for a “rigged tender” during his tenure as mayor of Beylikduzu. The hearing is expected to begin on June 15, and if found guilty, Imamoglu could face up to 7 years in prison, according to the report.
