US President Joe Biden’s administration announced on Wednesday that it was lifting restrictions it imposed in October that had travelers from Uganda redirected to five specific airports to be tested for the Ebola virus.

Earlier yesterday, at an official ceremony in Mubende, Uganda’s health minister, Jane Ruth Atseng, declared the end of the Ebola epidemic that broke out in September and officially claimed the lives of 55 people out of 142 laboratory-confirmed cases.

Based on World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, an Ebola outbreak is considered over when no new cases of the disease have been confirmed for 42 consecutive days, twice the incubation period of the virus.

The US Department of Homeland Security clarified that since no new cases of Ebola have been confirmed for two incubation periods of the virus (21 days), the restrictions that had been imposed are no longer deemed necessary.
