Almost one in five Brazilians approve of the planned invasion and destruction of three government buildings by supporters of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro – on Sunday in the capital Brasilia – according to a poll released Wednesday by the Atlas Institute.

To the question “do you agree with the actions of the protesters who occupied Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court”, 18.4% of the institute’s survey sample gave an affirmative answer, 75.8% said they disagreed and 5, 8% refrained from giving an answer.

53% of the sample characterizes the invasion as “completely unjustified”, 27.5% consider it “partially justified” and 10.5% “completely justified”.

A little more than half of Brazilians (50.2%) who participated in this poll believe that Mr. Bolsonaro is personally responsible for the riots.

The institute’s poll was conducted on Monday and Tuesday among a representative sample of 2,200 people.

Latin America’s largest country is tightening security in the face of fresh Bolsonaro protests, while 700 people remain in custody after Sunday’s riots.
