Austria: Stricter entry rules for countries with increased Omicron cases

by

Stricter entry regulations from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway will be implemented by Austria from Christmas, in an effort to stem the tide of the “Omicron” variant.

According to the government announcements made on Wednesday night, those who arrive in Austria from one of the above countries, are obliged to remain in quarantine for ten days. Those who have already received the booster vaccine and have an additional negative molecular test are exempted from the obligation.

Even stricter rules are expected to be imposed indoors from December 27, restricting indoor gatherings without pre-arranged seats to 25 people who have been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 (Rule 2G) and will wear a protective mask FFP2. In places with predetermined locations, it will be allowed to gather up to 500 people with 2G Rule or up to 1000 people with Rule 2G +, ie with a negative diagnostic test and up to 2000 people who have completed the booster vaccination and also have a negative test.

In the catering industry, from December 27 until New Year’s Eve, a traffic ban will be imposed from 22:00. Inevitably, all the big festive events for the change of the year are canceled.

The head of the Federal Medical Service, Katarina Reich, also noted that, especially for December 24, 25, 26 and 31, restrictions on gatherings of non-vaccinated people are suspended, with the only restriction being the limit of ten people, vaccinated or not. The 2G Rule applies to a gathering of 11-25 people.

Ms Reich, when asked about this, did not rule out the possibility of even imposing a general lockdown in January. “It is still unclear how we will continue after the New Year. “The data must be evaluated first,” he said. According to experts, from the first week of the new year there are likely to be 15,000 new cases a day, due to the “Omicron” variant.
