Moscow says it does not want “Western mediators” in peace talks with Ukraine while the deadly war continues.

If they resume, talks between Russia and Ukraine will likely be direct, without mediators, which would be the best option, Russian Foreign Ministry official Alexei Polischuk said in an interview with TASS.

“If and when they happen again these contacts will probably also be direct. And it would be the best option, as experience has shown that Western mediators often pursue their own goals and try to influence the talks, acting not for the settlement of the conflict, but for their own political and economic interests,” he said when he was asked whether the Russian side is ready for possible future talks directly with the current authorities in Kiev.

The senior diplomat noted that last year’s talks with the Ukrainian side were direct. “Until now we have only interacted with Ukrainians directly, using the platforms provided to us, which we really appreciate. Three rounds of Russian-Ukrainian dialogue were held in Belarus and one in Turkey in February – April last year. Later, almost daily contacts were held via teleconferences. They were direct talks with the Ukrainians,” he stressed.
