Ankara’s angry reaction was caused by a PKK video from Sweden. A group close to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has released a video showing protesters hanging a statue of Recep Tayyip Erdogan outside Stockholm’s city hall by its feet.

As reported by SKAI’s Istanbul correspondent Manolis Kostidis, Mevlut Cavusoglu openly threatened Stockholm that Turkey will not approve NATO membership if he “removes the mine” of the Kurds.

“What happened is unacceptable and we condemn it. This attack is not only against our president but is an insult against all of Turkey. The PKK is trying to prevent Sweden from joining NATO. If Sweden does not react to these demonstrations and actions, then we will not give the answer that Sweden wants for its accession to NATO. It’s clear,” Cavusoglu said.

“There is a bond between us. But the PKK is laying mines in the way of Sweden joining NATO. It is Sweden’s choice if he will clear this road of mines or if he will step on the mines. He must make a choice,” threatened the Turkish foreign minister.

Sweden’s ambassador to Ankara, Staffan Herström, was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday, and served with a protest. Sweden’s foreign ministry confirmed the ambassador had been summoned to the foreign ministry in Ankara, but declined to elaborate on what was discussed.

The video showing protesters hanging an Erdoğan effigy by its feet is on the front pages of Turkish newspapers today:
