Worshipers attending a memorial service for a mother and daughter who died weeks apart in November ran for safety at a Catholic church in the British capital that was targeted by gunmen.

“According to initial reports, shots were fired from a moving vehicle, which was immediately driven away” from the scene of the crime, London’s Metropolitan Police said in a press release, appealing for witnesses and those with video footage to come forward. with mobile phones or surveillance cameras.

“I heard this loud explosion, I thought this is not normal, immediately after that people were screaming and crying,” an eyewitness told the PA news agency.

In addition to the 7-year-old, a 12-year-old girl and four women were also injured. The episode unfolded in Camden, a short distance from the busy Houston metro station.

The second little girl was able to be released from the hospital where she was treated for minor leg injuries. The women, aged 21 to 54, whose lives are not believed to be in danger, continue to be treated, police said.

An eyewitness told news website MyLondon that the shots were fired as people who had attended the memorial service watched as doves were released in honor of the two women.

Parish priest Jeremy Trudt told the PA that the memorial service was held to honor Sarah Sanchez, 20, and her mother, who died 25 days apart in November, the former from leukemia, the latter from thrombosis.
