Another cold wave, the second in just over two months, is experiencing the United Kingdom, as a result of which problems are recorded mainly in transportation.

The mercury fell for another night below zero almost across the country. After the -9.8 degrees Celsius recorded on Monday, on Tuesday the temperature dropped to -6.

In the north and west, low temperatures brought heavy snowfall for a second night, while frost prevailed in other areas, including London.

Authorities are calling on drivers to be extra careful or, in the most dangerous parts of the country, not to use their vehicles unless absolutely necessary. On Monday night alone there were more than 100 road accidents, the most serious of which was a double-decker bus overturned in Somerset with 70 people on board, luckily without any serious injuries.

Yellow and orange warnings for snow or ice remain in place until Wednesday morning in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, southern England, including the capital, and northwest England. The warnings are expected to be renewed as unseasonably cold temperatures persist at least until Friday, when warmer air masses begin to blow through.

Significant delays are also reported on train routes in the west and north, while forecasters warn that there may be power outages.

Over 2,000 warm shelters have been opened across the country for people sleeping rough or unable to have heating at home.
