One was tying blades to the dueling roosters and the other was waiting to see the… sight
Two men have died during extreme cockfighting events held during the Sankranti harvest festival celebrations in India.
One victim was tying blades to the legs of a rooster when the animal spooked, causing it to fly into the air and seriously injure the 42-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
Around the same time in another part of India, a 20-year-old man was also fatally injured while waiting to watch similar cockfights, the Daily Mail reports.
Cockfighting is a common occurrence in India, especially during Sankranti. Makar Sankranti, also referred to as Uttarayana, Makar, or simply Sankranti, is a Hindu holiday and festival. Usually falling on January 15th annually, this occasion marks the Sun’s transition from Sagittarius to Capricorn.
Cockfighting is a tradition in the region, but many have taken the sport more extreme by attaching blades to the animals’ legs.
This extreme version of the sport has been banned in India since 2018.
