At the same time, German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser said today that he proposed to Kyiv the “support” of Germany in the investigation aimed at ascertaining the causes of the tragedy, in which its Ukrainian counterpart also lost his life.
The helicopter crash is “terrible news,” she also said in a statement, in which she expressed her deep regret for the death of her counterpart and his colleagues and the fact that children also lost their lives.
The head of the national police confirmed that Interior Minister Denis Monastirski, who had been appointed by Zelenskiy in 2021, was killed. Also dead are his deputy minister, Yevgeny Jenin, and the secretary of the Ministry of the Interior.
Monastirski, 42, was a lawyer and politician. He secured a seat in the 2019 parliamentary elections with Zelensky’s party. He served as head of the Parliamentary Committee on Law Enforcement and replaced Arshen Avakov as interior minister after his departure in July 2021.
British Home Secretary Suella Braverman called Monastirsky “a leading bright figure in support of the Ukrainian people during Putin’s illegal invasion” and noted that she had been impressed by “his determination, optimism and patriotism”.
