Ron Jeremy: Former porn star accused of rape suffers from dementia and will not stand trial

Former porn star Ron Jeremy, accused of raping and sexually assaulting 21 women – some of them minors – has been ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial.

The court’s decision came on Tuesday, almost a year after a psychiatric examination was ordered because the actor failed to recognize one of his lawyers who visited him in prison.

Jeremy has more than 1,700 appearances in pornographic films since the late 1970s. In June 2020, he was charged with raping three women and sexually assaulting a fourth. After he was arrested and brought before a court in Los Angeles, there followed a pile of complaints against him. Since then, he has remained in custody, accused of raping and other offenses against 21 women between the ages of 15 and 51, from 1996 onwards.

According to the Los Angeles Times, psychiatric experts have concluded that he suffers from dementia and his perception has been significantly affected. “If his condition does not improve, we will not be able to prosecute him for his crimes,” prosecutor Paul Thompson said in an email leaked to the newspaper.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office explained today that the court will determine on February 7 where Jeremy will be held, possibly in a nursing facility.

In theory, the judicial authorities can in the future try him if his condition improves. But dementia is a degenerative disease that usually gets worse over time.

Ron Jeremy himself had denied all charges and pleaded not guilty when he was brought before a court, while his lawyer, Stuart Goldfarb, assured that his client “is not a rapist”.
