Countries that procure weapons from Germany are not allowed to re-export them to a third country such as Poland without permission
“Mutiny” by Poland to re-export Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Warsaw is ready to send Leopard 2 tanks, even without Germany’s consentPrime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said according to Politico.
“Either we will reach this agreement quickly or we will do the right thing ourselves,” the Polish prime minister clarified.
Poland has committed to sending 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. But since the tanks are German-made, it needs Berlin’s approval for re-export, which Chancellor Olaf Soltz has yet to grant.
“Consent here is a side issue”Morawiecki told Poland’s public radio station while returning from Davos, where he attended the World Economic Forum.
Several of Germany’s European allies have asked Berlin to approve the re-export of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but the German government itself is waiting for the United States to make the first move.
“Here, the most important thing is for the Germans (…) to offer their modern tanks, their modern equipment, as soon as possible, because the ability to defend freedom in Ukraine may depend on it, and thus the security of all of Europe will depend on it,” emphasized the Polish Prime Minister.
So far, the German government has not backed down. When pressed on the issue speaking at an event in Davos on Wednesday, Chancellor Olaf Solz reiterated his government’s position on sending military aid to Ukraine. “We are [από] those who do the most”Soltz was content to state.
“We never do something alone, but together with others, especially the United States, which is very important in this common task of defending Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty,” he added.
The UK has also formally committed to supplying Ukraine with some of its own tanks, the British Challenger 2s.
Ukraine has been pressuring its Western allies to hand over armored tanks in recent weeks, saying he needs hundreds to launch a major counteroffensive against Russia in the spring.
