Baldwin and Rust gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez Reed will be charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal gunshot wound of Halina Hutchins on the set of Rust

In his first – strong – reaction, the American actor Alec Baldwin vowed to “fight” the manslaughter charges announced Thursday by prosecutors in New Mexico, calling them a “terrible miscarriage of justice.”

Baldwin and Rust gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez Reed will be charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal gunshot wound to Halina Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust.

New Mexico First District Attorney Mary Carmack Altwiss and Special Counsel Andrea Reeb announced the charges in a written statement today. Both Baldwin and Gutierrez Reed face a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison if convicted.

In a statement, the actor’s lawyer says: “This decision distorts the tragic death of Halina Hutchins and represents a terrible miscarriage of justice. Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a (real) bullet in the gun — or anywhere on the movie set. He relied on the professionals he was working with who assured him that the gun did not have regular bullets. We will fight these accusations and win.”

For their part, attorneys for gunsmith Hannah Goodyears Reed issued a similar statement. “Hannah is, and always has been, deeply moved and saddened by this tragic accident. But he did not commit manslaughter. These accusations are the result of a very flawed investigation and an inaccurate understanding of the facts,” it is emphasized.

“We intend to bring the full truth to light and believe that Hannah will be vindicated by a jury.”

However, the prosecutors declare sure of the decision.

“If any of these three people – Alec Baldwin, Hannah Gutierrez Reed or David Halls – had done their job, Halina Hutchins would be alive today. It’s that simple,” said special prosecutor Andrea Reeb.

Assistant director David Halls, who handed Baldwin the loaded gun, took a plea deal and faces a misdemeanor charge.
