More than 100,000 protesters in Tel Aviv against the Netanyahu government

More than 100,000 people demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, according to Israeli police estimates.

Protesters, who denounce the ruling coalition as the most right-wing in the country’s history, gathered for the third consecutive Saturday in various parts of the Israeli metropolis.

Waving Israeli flags, they held up placards reading “Stop the End of Democracy” and posters of Netanyahu labeled “Criminal”. Former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid, among others, participated in the demonstration.

Protest rallies were also held in Jerusalem, Haifa and Beersheba.

The protests are mainly directed against the government’s plan to weaken the country’s judicial system. Under the plan promoted by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, parliament would be able to pass a bill with a simple majority in defiance of even Israel’s Supreme Court.

Levin also plans changes to the composition of the House that appoints judges. The changes may, according to political analysts, favor Netanyahu, who is facing justice on corruption charges.

Adding fuel to the fire was a recent verdict by the Supreme Court, which ruled last Wednesday that the appointment of Arie Deri as Minister of Interior and Health cannot be confirmed, citing previous convictions against him. In addition, the judges cited the fact that in a tax evasion trial last year, Derry had assured the court that he intended to retire from politics.

The new coalition government amended the law to allow Derry to be appointed as minister. The leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party is considered a close ally of Netanyahu. The Israeli prime minister has so far not commented on the Supreme Court’s verdict on Derry.
