Coronation of King Charles III will have processions, food and show

The coronation of King Charles III in May will feature a star-studded concert, a grand “national lunch” and a volunteer drive, in addition to the traditional ceremony and processions, Buckingham Palace announced Saturday. .

The three days of festivities, ceremonies and community events will be an opportunity “for people to come together in celebrating a historic occasion”, the palace added. Until then, the monarchy will try to reduce the negative impact of the incendiary statements about the royal family contained in the memoir of Prince Harry, the king’s youngest son, released this month.

It is not yet known whether Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, who live in the United States, will attend the coronation, which usually takes place months after the monarch takes office, due to national mourning and the adjustment of details of the event.

Charles III’s coronation, the first in the UK since 1953, will take place on May 6 at Westminster Abbey. His wife, Camilla, 75, will be crowned as consort.

The couple will arrive from the palace without other members of the royal family, in what is known as the “king’s procession”, and will return with an entourage, in the “coronation procession”.

To close the first day, royals will greet the population on a balcony of Buckingham Palace, on whose esplanade thousands of people are expected to gather.

The following day, a “special coronation show” will be held at Windsor Castle and broadcast live on the BBC, featuring “world music icons and contemporary stars”.

At night, a light show entitled “Illuminate the nation” will fill emblematic places with color, with projectors, lasers and drones. Neighbors and communities will be invited to attend “great coronation luncheons” as a “national act of celebration and friendship”.

Monday, the last day of festivities, will be organized by charitable and religious groups, which “will highlight the positive impact of volunteering in the country’s communities”.

Charles III became King of England in September following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96.
