Lula confirms bilateral meeting with Maduro in Argentina

by

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) will meet with Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro this Monday (23), his press office told Reuters news agency. The bilateral meeting, scheduled for 4 pm, takes place one day before the CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) summit in Buenos Aires.

Venezuela had been excluded from Brazilian relations in 2020, during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Lula defends that Maduro be reintegrated into the South American diplomatic community to resolve the political impasse in the country, which has lasted for decades. One of his government’s first actions was to restore diplomatic relations with Caracas and order the reopening of the embassy in the capital.

The return to Celac is part of the itinerary for Lula’s first international trip in his third term, which includes an official visit to the Argentine government.
