This episode takes place while there has been tension in the region for months and diplomatic pressure is being exerted on Belgrade and Pristina to find a solution to the many problems they face in their relations.
The shooting happened on the road connecting the communities of Leposavic and Mitrovica in northern Kosovo, an area where many Serbs live, when the car failed to stop at a police checkpoint. According to the Kosovar authorities, the police opened fire “to neutralize the danger”. Police also claim that the driver hit a security vehicle with his car.
The Serbian government, which does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, said a Serb resident of the area was wounded in the chest and taken to Serbia for treatment.
Kosovo police did not report any injuries, saying only that the car “left the scene”.
Since November, the situation in northern Kosovo has been tense. Hundreds of Serbs, including police officers, judges and prosecutors, resigned en masse in protest at the decision (which was later suspended) to ban Kosovo Serbs from using Serbian car plates. Soon after, members of the Serbian minority set up barricades blocking the roads leading to the border with Serbia.
