Today’s sanctions also target government agencies and private companies that provide security services and engage in activities that prohibit, restrict or punish the exercise of freedom of expression.

The EU’s Foreign Affairs Council decided today to add 18 individuals and 19 entities to the list of those subject to restrictive measures in Iran, for human rights violations.

Among those subject to restrictive measures are representatives of the government and the Iranian parliament (Majles), prominent political figures and media figures, as well as high-ranking members of Iran’s security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Today’s sanctions also target government agencies and private companies that provide security services and engage in activities that prohibit, restrict or punish the exercise of freedom of expression.

The restrictive measures against Iran now apply to a total of 164 individuals and 31 entities. They consist of an asset freeze, a ban on travel to the EU and a ban on making funds or financial resources available to those on the list. There is also a ban on exports to Iran of equipment that could be used in repression operations, and equipment to monitor telecommunications.

The EU and its Member States urge the Iranian authorities to stop their violent crackdown on peaceful protests, to stop resorting to arbitrary detention as a means of silencing critical voices and to release all those illegally detained.

The EU continues to call on Iran to immediately stop the imposition and execution of death sentences against protesters, to annul the death sentences imposed and to provide due process to all prisoners.
