Lavrov: The West is waging a “real war” against Russia in Ukraine

Speaking in Pretoria, the Russian foreign minister charged that the West was “trying to destroy everything Russian, from language to culture,” Russian state news agency TASS reported.

The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, yesterday Monday accused the West of waging a “real war” against Russia.

“If we talk about what is happening in Ukraine, this is not a hybrid war: this is a real war against Russia, for which the West has been preparing for a long time,” Mr. Lavrov said during a visit to South Africa.

Speaking in Pretoria, the Russian foreign minister charged that the West was “trying to destroy everything Russian, from language to culture,” Russian state news agency TASS reported.

Mr Lavrov spoke after meeting his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has justified ordering his army to invade Ukraine — the war now enters its twelfth month — by claiming that Kyiv is persecuting Russians and Russian-speakers in Ukraine. Kyiv and the West talk to each other about an unprovoked and conquering war.

South Africa, a member of the BRICS group of emerging economies (along with Brazil, Russia, India and China), has adopted a stance of neutrality regarding the armed conflict in Ukraine.

Joint naval naval exercises of the South African, Russian and Chinese navies are planned off the port of Durban in the second fortnight of February to coincide with the anniversary of the invasion.

A Russia-Africa summit is also planned for July in St. Petersburg.
