‘Clearly, we are very different,’ says Boric of Bolsonaro

by

The president-elect of Chile, Gabriel Boric, reacted this Friday (24) to comments made by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) the day before and said: “clearly, we are very different”.

On Thursday (23), the Brazilian president stated in his weekly live that he had determined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to congratulate “that Boric”, after four days of silence by the government on the leftist’s victory in Chile’s presidential elections. Among the main countries in South America, Brazil was the last to speak out.

Já na quarta (22), o deputado federal Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP), filho do presidente, escreveu no Twitter que a proposta de Boric de elevar impostos para financiar políticas sociais é “algo muito parecido com o que prometiam Chávez e Maduro” , in reference to the former president and current dictator of Venezuela.

After taking the booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Friday, Boric was asked about the comments of the Brazilian president and his son. According to the Chilean newspaper na Terceira, the leftist replied: “I hadn’t seen that, we’ll analyze it later. I won’t make intemperate statements. I believe that in state policies it is necessary to be a little more careful.”

Gabriel Boric, leader of the 2011 student protests, was elected president of Chile on Sunday (19) when he defeated the ultra-rightist José Antonio Kast, a candidate favored by pocketbookism.

By gathering the support of 4.6 million voters (55.8% against 44.1%), the name of Frente Amplio became the most voted candidate in Chilean history.

In an election in which traditional parties were rejected at the polls, Boric, 35, represents a new generation of politicians who emerged from the student riots of 2011.

To garner the necessary support for victory, however, he moderated his speech and reconciled with the Concertación, the center-left alliance that ruled Chile for 20 years.

Throughout the campaign, Boric also criticized leftist regimes in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, accused of undermining democratic institutions and violating human rights.
