Red Cross: Boosts aid to civilians in Ukraine

by

An escalation of the fighting is expected, Maxim Dochenko said

THE Ukrainian Red Cross is preparing to provide more aid to the country’s civilian population in war-torn areas in light of a possible new Russian attack, its secretary-general announced.

“Everyone is expecting some intensification of the fighting,” Maxim Dochenko told Reuters during a visit to Berlin.

Since last February’s invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, approx 11 million people have left their homes, the 7 million have been displaced within the country, while 4 million are estimated to be refugees in neighboring countries.

The Red Cross, the largest civilian organization in Ukraine, does not have access to Russian-held territory in eastern and southern Ukraine, but is active in the rest of the country.

He increased his staff to 1,500 employees from 400 before the war, while more than doubling the number of its volunteers, according to Dochenko.

Five of the Ukrainian Red Cross volunteers lost their lives in the war, he added, one of them in Russian bombing of Kherson in southern Ukraine.

“I can’t say that all needs are met. But I can say that in general the situation is under control,” Dochenko noted.

The Red Cross, he noted, intends to supply hospitals and other facilities with generators in the event of further Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.

“Of course we need more financial support,” he added, but there is no need for clothing donations.

The lines of the forehead, which extend to more than 1,000 kilometers in eastern and southern Ukraine, have been frozen in place for two months despite heavy casualties on both sides, but it is widely believed that both Russia and Ukraine are planning new attacks.
