According to the police representative, three of the seven injured are hospitalized with a serious condition.

Passengers on a Kiel-Hamburg train were stabbed by a fellow passenger today, killing two people and injuring seven others.

The attacker – a 33-year-old man of Palestinian origin, police said – was stopped and later arrested by officers at Brockstedt train station in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Three of the seven injured are hospitalized in a serious condition, a police spokesman said.

Interior Secretary Nancy Fesser said she was “shocked” in a tweet, expressing her condolences to the victims of the attack and their families.

The motive of the attacker has not been ascertained, with the German police looking into all possibilities.

German authorities remain on high alert to prevent jihadist attacks, especially after the December 19, 2016, massacre at a Christmas market in Berlin. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the truck attack that killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

From 2013 to the end of 2021, the number of “dangerous” Islamists in Germany has increased fivefold to 615, according to the country’s interior ministry. Acting on an FBI alert, German authorities announced on January 8 the arrest of two Iranians allegedly planning a chemical attack.
