There were joys and royal weddings in the Sultanate of Brunei after the long-time Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah married his daughter with all the splendor that befits the occasion.

The happy event is probably overshadowed by the news that the bride married her first cousin, Prince Bahar ibni Jefri Bolkiah, who is the son of the Sultan’s brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah.

Because perhaps in Brunei the laws of incest do not apply as in the West, the international media focused on the luxury and splendor of the wedding, which lasted almost two weeks.

The engagement was announced by the palace on December 31. The wedding celebrations began on January 16 with a ceremony in which the Sultan officially gave his blessing to the couple.

The news of the wedding was conveyed to the public by Prince Mateen, brother of the bride, writing on Instagram: “Congratulations to the newlyweds. I am very happy for both of you. Much love to my beautiful sister.”

In the religious ceremony held at the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque – without the bride, as required by Islam – the groom said his vows in front of a group of men in attendance, including the Sultan of Brunei, who was also his daughter’s representative at the wedding.

The celebrations continued with the official Istiadat Bersanding Pengantin Diraja ceremony in a grand gilded hall in the royal palace, with the bride and groom officially appearing as a couple.
