Peruvian president asks Congress to bring elections to December

by

Pressured in the streets, the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, asked this Friday (27) the Congress to approve the anticipation of the presidential elections in the country for December of this year.

Initially, the election had been brought forward to April 2024, as an attempt to mitigate the political and social crisis facing Peru. Protesters continued to ask, however, for more urgency in the voting and for Dina’s resignation, something she promised not to do from the first day she took office.

This Thursday (26), a group of parliamentarians allied with former president Pedro Castillo, removed from office after failing in an attempted coup d’état, presented a motion to remove Dina, accusing her of “permanent moral incompetence”.

International pressure is also growing, with leaders such as the presidents of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro, using the CELAC Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to call for an end to political violence after more than 50 people died in protests in Peru.

In an interview with Sheet, the Peruvian ambassador to Brazil, Rómulo Acurio, echoed the defense that bringing forward the elections would be the best way out of the crisis. “Peru needs the support of the international community and neighboring countries to move towards that only democratic and viable way out: general elections as soon as possible.”
