54% of respondents consider the federal government’s decision to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine correct,
In favor of delivery of Leopard 2 tanks the majority of Germans are in favor of Ukraine, while opinions are divided on the risk that the decision will lead to a Russian attack on Western countries. At the same time, the deterioration of the Greens continues.
According to today’s “Political Barometer” of the second channel of German public television ZDF, 54% of respondents consider the decision of the federal government to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine correct, with 38% expressing the opposite opinion. Of particular interest is the fact that the highest percentage in favor of the delivery of the Leopard 2 is found among voters in favor of the Greens, with 75%, followed by supporters of the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) with 64%, of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 61% and the Liberals (FDP), with 55%. By contrast, only 31% of Left voters and just 6% of Alternative for Germany (AfD) voters support the government’s decision. The differences between eastern and western Germany remain, with citizens in the western states approving of the deployment of the Leopard 2 at a rate of 59%, compared to 35% of citizens in the eastern regions.
On the question whether “the delivery of tanks to Ukraine increases the risk of a Russian attack against Western states”, the answers are completely divided, with 48% for “yes” and “no”. However, expectations from the new Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius are high, with 68% estimating that “he will do his job well” and only 8% expressing the opposite opinion. “I don’t know” answers 24%.
In the vote intention question, CDU/CSU are still ahead with 27%, unchanged from the previous measurement, while the SPD gains one point to reach 21%. The Greens, on the other hand, lose two points and are again in third place, with 19%. It is followed by the AfD with 15% (+1), the FDP with 6% without change and the Left with 6%, also without change in its percentages.
The picture of deterioration for the Greens also includes ministers, with the popularity of Finance Ministers Robert Hambeck and Foreign Affairs Minister Analena Burbock on the decline. On the other hand, the popularity of Chancellor Olaf Solz, who, according to 55%, is “doing his job well” is on the rise. 59% of respondents believe, at the same time, that relations between the governing coalition parties (SPD, Greens, FDP) are “bad”, compared to 33% who consider them to be “good”. 71%, however, expect the government to last until the end of its term, in 2025.
