The first graves in the area started appearing on social media last December, and the cemetery has been expanding ever since.
Maxar Technologies has released satellite images from the village of Bakinskaya in Russia’s Krasnodar region that show one of the cemeteries where fighters from the Wagner group, a Russian private mercenary organization, are buried.
The first graves in the area started appearing on social media last December. On January 2, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti showed Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin visiting the site and laying a wreath at one of the graves.
“Here we bury fighters who stated in their will that they want to be buried here,” Prigozhin explained, according to RIA. “Or orphans and those whose bodies, for some reason, relatives do not want to take.”
However, as reported by CNN and based on satellite images, the number of graves in this particular cemetery is increasing.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, the Bakinskaya cemetery shown in satellite photos, as well as a nearby secondary site in the nearby town of Goryachy Klyuch, may hold about 1,000 dead Wagner soldiers.
