Following the conclusion of the preliminary investigation, “four juveniles were taken into custody” by Epinal police, prosecutor Frederic Naon said.

Four 13-year-olds will stand trial in France for “school bullying that led to the suicide” of a peer who took his own life in early January in Golbeth, prosecutors announced today.

The death of little Lucas caused strong emotion in France and many reactions on social networking sites. Relatives of the teenager believe he took his own life after being harassed for being gay.

After the preliminary investigation was completed, “four juveniles were taken into custody” by Epinal police, prosecutor Frederic Naon said in a statement. They are two girls and two boys, who attended the same school as Lukas and only admitted that they mocked their classmate many times, he explained.

The events unfolded from September 2022 to early January 2023. The four teenagers will be brought before Epinal juvenile court on charges of school bullying that caused the victim’s suicide.

The prosecutor also announced that an “unidentified” investigation has been launched for “failure to report the abuse of a minor”.

Lucas wrote in his diary “a sentence explaining that he wanted to end his life”. Relatives said other students at Golbey’s Louis Armand high school teased and insulted him for being gay.

The child’s suicide caused many reactions. “Thinking of all the students who are being bullied, like him: their desperation underpins my determination to prevent all forms of bullying,” Education Minister Pape Diaget tweeted.
