Kyiv called the Hungarian prime minister’s statements “completely unacceptable” – Hungary has said it will veto any EU sanctions against Russia that affect nuclear power.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry will summon its ambassador Hungary to protest the “completely unacceptable” statements made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban about Ukraine, Kyiv announced today.
The announcement marks a further deterioration in relations between the two neighboring countries. Hungary has repeatedly criticized the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, saying they have failed to effectively weaken Moscow and risk crippling the European economy.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko, in a Facebook message, said Orban told reporters that the Ukraine is a “neutral zone” and compared it to Afghanistan.
“Such statements are completely unacceptable. Budapest continues a deliberate course aimed at destroying Hungarian-Ukrainian relations,” he added.
“The Hungarian ambassador will be summoned to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry for a frank discussion. We reserve our right to take other measures in response.
Orban said earlier today that Hungary would veto any EU sanctions against Russia that hit nuclear power. Hungary has a Russian-built nuclear power plant, which it plans to expand.
