Anger and outrage – Joe Biden himself said he was “outraged” and “deeply hurt” by watching the video, while the Memphis police chief called it “inhumane”
The video of the violent arrest and beating of 29-year-old African-American Tyree Nichols by police has caused outrage and indignation in the US.
Nichols died three days later.
US President Joe Biden himself said that he was “outraged” and “deeply hurt” by watching the video, while the chief of police in Memphis called it “inhumane”.
The video in question, which was released in four parts by the Memphis Police Department, included footage from both a uniformed body camera and a security camera on a street lamp.
While the 29-year-old is seen lying seriously injured after being beaten, the video shows an ambulance arriving at the scene almost half an hour later.
“I hope they rip him apart”
The police brutally attacked the 29-year-old on the occasion of checking the African-American’s vehicle.
“F@@@ you and get out of the car!” one policeman shouts several times while another pulls him out. A police officer pulled him out of the car. Nicholls shouts “I didn’t do anything” as a policeman yells at him to “get on the f@@@ing ground” and warns he will taser him.
Nichols tells them “I’m on the ground, you’re overreacting, I didn’t do anything, I’m just trying to get home.”
Nichols at one point tries to run away and the police arrest him at an intersection, where his fatal beating begins.
One of the officers can be heard saying “I hope they rip him off”…
Nicholls shouts “mum, mum” as the officers beat him mercilessly, kicking him in the head, while the 29-year-old is already on the ground, handcuffed, unable to react.
I don’t think I can consume much more of it #TyreNichols video.
Hearing him scream “MOM” sent chills down my spine.
I am praying for his mother, loved ones and the city of #Memphis. 🙏🏽
