The head of Russian diplomacy called on Israel’s Eli Cohen and Palestine’s Riad Al-Maliki to do everything they can to avoid an escalation of violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, “Sergei Lavrov called on Israeli and Palestinian partners to show maximum responsibility and refrain from any actions that could cause further deterioration of the situation.”

During these talks, “the Russian side underlined that Moscow is seriously concerned by the new cycle of violence” in the region, according to the Russian ministry.

Lavrov also said there was an “urgent” need for the “Quartet” of international mediators to resume peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

On Saturday, Russian diplomacy had already called in a statement for all sides to show “maximum restraint” after attacks on Friday and Saturday in East Jerusalem followed a deadly Israeli military raid on Thursday in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli police today sealed off the Jerusalem home of the family of a Palestinian gunman who killed seven people outside a synagogue the day after a raid by Israeli forces killed seven gunmen and two civilians in the West Bank. Also today, Israeli security guards killed a Palestinian in the West Bank, and the violence of recent days has raised fears of a new flare-up in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
