Syria: Wounds against trucks carrying weapons – Casualty reports

“Six refrigerated trucks were the target of strikes carried out by unknown aircraft in the Buqamal border region, killing or injuring those on board,” Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

known warplanes struck and destroyed a convoy of trucks carrying Iranian weapons in eastern Syria on Sunday after entering from neighboring Iraq, a Syrian NGO said, citing an unspecified number of casualties.

“Six refrigerated trucks were the target of strikes carried out by unknown aircraft in the Bukamal border region after crossing into Syrian territory from Iraq,” Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

The strikes destroyed the trucks and killed or wounded their occupants, added Abdel Rahman, whose organization has a large network of sources in war-torn Syria. He did not give an exact casualty count.

“The trucks were carrying Iranian weapons,” he added, as Iran, a close ally of the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, is helping Damascus militarily in the conflict mainly through armed factions.

According to the Observatory, at least two similar convoys entered Syria this week from Iraq. They unloaded weapons on pro-Iranian organizations in the city of Al-Mayadeen (east).

The towns of Al-Mayadeen and Buqamal are located in Deir Ezzor province, which is divided and controlled by various organizations and factions.

Damascus forces and Iranian fighters as well as organizations loyal to them control the area west of the Euphrates River, which divides the province into two parts. The Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the US-led international coalition against jihadists, control the areas on its eastern banks.

Iranian and Iraqi forces as well as pro-Iranian organizations, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah, are deployed in a large area in the east of the province, mainly between Buqamal and Al-Mayadeen.

The international coalition has repeatedly admitted to carrying out strikes in this area against pro-Iranian fighters. Israel, a neighboring country and enemy of Syria, has carried out several raids against Iranian targets in recent years on Syrian soil.

Last November, a raid targeting a convoy carrying weapons and fuel for pro-Iranian militias in the Bukamal district killed at least 14 people, according to the Observatory.

The international coalition, whose members are stationed in Syria and Iraq, had said it was not behind the raid, while Israel had declined to comment.

Since 2011, the conflict in Syria, in which several forces and armed organizations have been involved, has claimed almost half a million lives.
