Middle East: Macron appeals for de-escalation of violence

by

During a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Emmanuel Macron stated that he is willing to contribute to the resumption of dialogue between the two sides.

An appeal to Israelis and Palestinians to stop “fueling” the escalation of violence, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed yesterday.

During his telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “the President of the Republic recalled the need to avoid measures that could fuel” the further escalation of violence, says a press release from Eliseh.

Besides, “once again”, he declared that he is willing “to contribute to the resumption of the dialogue between the Palestinians and the Israelis”, continues the press release of the French presidency.

The head of state expressed his “condolences to the Israeli people” for “the victims of the terrorist attack” during which seven people died outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem.

He once again condemned the “vile attack”, speaking of France’s “full solidarity with Israel in its fight against terrorism” and repeating France’s “permanent commitment to the security” of that country.

Last Saturday, a thirteen-year-old Palestinian wounded two Israelis with bullets in Silwan, two steps from the old city.

Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s response would be “strong” and “immediate” after the two attacks. Yesterday Sunday, Israeli guards killed a Palestinian in the West Bank.

The attacks in East Jerusalem followed a deadly raid by Israeli forces on Thursday in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, which was followed by rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and Israeli airstrikes in retaliation.

The two leaders also addressed the progress of Iran’s nuclear energy program, in violation of the 2015 international agreement.

President Macron underlined that the “necessary rigor” will be shown in the face of “increasingly worrying developments” and “the lack of transparency of the Iranians”.

While he “recalled that Iranian support for the Russian attack on Ukraine exposes Iran to sanctions and increasing isolation,” the statement of his services concludes.
