Among the victims are musicians, customers and employees of the nightclub, local media reported
Eight people were murdered by gunmen who raided a night club in Jerez, a city in central-north Mexico, in the heart of a region swept by drug cartel violence, local authorities announced yesterday Sunday.
Heavily armed men opened fire on the night of Friday to Saturday inside the nightclub, in the state of Sacatecas, about 670 kilometers north of the capital, according to the same sources.
Six people they died on the spottwo others succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical attention.
Among the victims are musicians, customers and employees of the nightclub, local media reported.
Five other people with bullet wounds were being treated in hospitals yesterday.
Violence in Sakatekas forced hundreds of citizens to flee last year. It is mainly attributed to the conflict between the two most powerful cartels in the country, the so-called Nea Genia cartel of Jalisco and the Sinaloa state cartel.
In March 2022, the two organizations clashed over control of a village that had been abandoned by its residents before it was retaken by security forces.
Since 2006, when the so-called “war on drugs” was declared, with the involvement of the military, more than 340,000 murders have been recorded in Mexico, mainly attributed to gangs.
One of the architects of this “war”, former Security Minister Genaro GarcÃa Luna, is currently on trial in New York, as he was allegedly an accomplice of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán’s Sinaloa cartel.
