Germany: Public debate on fighter jets in Ukraine has begun, despite Scholz’s “no”

by

Officials and parliamentarians say they are positive about the possibility of handing over fighter jets to the forces of Kiev

After the “yes” to sending German Leopard heavy tanks to UkraineChancellor Olaf Scholz flatly denies sending fighter jets as a next step, stressing in every public statement that “a German and NATO conflict with Russia” must be avoided at all costs.

At the same time, however, a public discussion has also begun in Germany regarding a possible, future mission of warplanes to Ukraine. Christoph Huisgen, head of the important Munich Security Conference, which is expected to start soon (February 17 to 19), does not rule out such a possibility.

Speaking to the public television network ARD, he expressed the opinion that “the dispatch of fighter jets would be sufficient to better protect Ukraine from air attacks”, stressing that he does not believe in “red lines” at all.

According to Huisgen they could possibly be used in Ukraine American F-16 fighters or even warplanes of East German origin from the old stocks of the former GDR. As he points out, foreign forces can supply Ukraine with armament systems, including tanks and fighter aircraft, in accordance with international law.

Different trends within the Social Democrats?

At the same time, the public position of the co-chair of the Social Democrats Saskia Esken, who avoided categorically opposing a mission of fighter jets to Ukraine after a related question on the Bericht aus Berlin show, is causing a sensation.

He merely said that “it is very important that Germany and NATO do not become belligerents”, that the German government “wants to avoid this in the future” and that Germany is “coordinating with the US”.

In this way, Esken possibly wanted to express the different tendencies that are also recorded within the Social Democrats (that is, the party of Chancellor Olaf Solz) regarding the ways of continuing military support in Ukraine.

According to the website tagesschau.de of the first program of the German public television in his earlier statement John Feiner, an. National Security Adviser to US President Joe Biden, had not ruled out sending any specific weapon system to Ukraine, noting that US aid is aligned with Ukraine’s needs on the ground.
