Last week Norway announced its intention to send to Ukraine some of the 36 tanks currently in use by the ground forces.
“We haven’t decided the number yet“, said Minister Bjorn Arild Gram, speaking to AFP.
“It is important to coordinate (the mission) with our partners so that this donation makes a difference for Ukraine“, he added.
“We certainly hope that it will be done as soon as possible. It is an urgent need“, the minister continued, on the sidelines of his visit to a NASAMS anti-aircraft missile assembly plant in Kongsberg, southeastern Norway.
On the issue of “joint coordination” of the allies, Gram recalled that Germany had talked about deliveries of Leopard 2 tanks “at the end of March».
Last week German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the aim is to send 14 tanks “at the end of March to the beginning of April».
The Norwegian minister noted that the time period needed for his country to receive the green light for the re-export of the tanks, but also for the training of Ukrainian soldiers in their use, should be taken into account.
Many other Western countries intend to send heavy tanks to Ukraine, with Britain planning to supply the Ukrainian army with Challenger tanks around the end of March.
