Brazil blocks sending ammunition for German-made tanks to Ukraine

“Brazil is a country of peace. And that’s why Brazil wants no part in this war, not even indirectly,” said the country’s president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Brazil will not supply Ukraine with ammunition for the Leopard 2 tanks that Germany recently promised to send to Kyiv, the country’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said after meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday.

Brasilia also does not plan to send ammunition for the German-made Gepard anti-aircraft guns that have already been sent to Ukraine, he added.

“Brazil is not interested in sending ammunition to be used in the war between Ukraine and Russia,” Lula clarified during a joint press conference with Mr. Solz, who arrived in Brazil — the last stop on his Latin American tour — yesterday Sunday.

“Brazil is a country of peace. And that is why Brazil does not want any participation in this war, not even indirectly,” insisted the center-left president.

Berlin has delivered 30 Gepards to Kyiv and has promised to send seven more. But ammunition for these vehicles, which are equipped with twin radar-guided anti-aircraft guns, is now in short supply. Although German manufacturer Rheinmetall is preparing to commission a factory to make ammunition for them, production is not expected to begin until June and the first quantities will be ready for delivery in July.

Already in April 2022, Germany approached Brazil to secure up to 300,000 Gepard missiles. But now Lula ruled out any such possibility.

In addition to Gepard, the Brazilian armed forces also have German-made Leopard 1 heavy tanks, an older type.
