Latvia, the third Baltic state, has announced that it will also expel Russia’s ambassador in a show of solidarity with Estonia
Lithuania’s foreign minister called on European Union member states on Tuesday to stop hosting Russian ambassadors as diplomatic tensions between the Baltic states and Moscow have continued to escalate since the Russian army invaded Ukraine in February. of 2022.
“It is of no use to have a Russian ambassador in a European capital,” Gabrielius Landsbergis said during a press conference in Riga.
“In most cases, it is not a diplomatic institution, it is an institution of propaganda, covering up war crimes and generally promoting a genocidal agenda,” he insisted.
Lithuania downgraded diplomatic relations with Moscow, expelling the Russian ambassador in April 2022, following Ukrainian allegations of a massacre of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Butsa.
Last week, Estonia announced it was expelling Russia’s ambassador in retaliation after the Kremlin declared the Estonian ambassador persona non grata.
“We adhere to the principle of proportionality in relations with Russia,” the Estonian Foreign Ministry commented on Twitter, clarifying that the Russian ambassador will leave at the same time as his Estonian counterpart, who was asked by Moscow to leave Russian territory before the February 7th.
Latvia, the third Baltic state, announced it would also expel Russia’s ambassador in solidarity with Estonia, adding that it was withdrawing its own ambassador from Moscow.
