German and Dutch consulates closed after threats – “The risk of an attack is particularly high around Taksim Square” announced the German Foreign Ministry
Western concerns about a “strike” on Western targets in Turkey – and especially in Istanbul – are growing after the recent Koran-burning events by protesters in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Today, the German consulate in Istanbul was closed for the whole day, while earlier the temporary closure of its consulate in Istanbul was also announced by the Netherlandsafter threats received by the diplomatic mission.
THE Germany warned its citizens in Istanbul that the risk of attack is particularly high in the central Beyoglu district and around Taksim Square.
The ministry said the move to close the consulate was made after an “assessment by the security authorities” and called on German citizens to be especially careful and avoid places where there are large crowds.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends avoiding gatherings and demonstrations in Turkey Belgium in his highlight on the page: “Traveling to Turkey: Travel Instructions”, with the footnote “Safety”.
In particular, it states: “Avoid gatherings and demonstrations and be alert due to the risk of a terrorist attack (places frequented by Westerners, places of worship, etc.).”
Sweden, Norway and Denmark, as well as the US, had already warned their citizens last week of an increased risk of attack in Turkey.
The US on Monday updated its warning specifically mentioning Istanbul.
Turkey, for its part, has warned its citizens of attacks in Europe and the United States, issuing travel advisories for the “possibility of racist attacks.”
