Alicia Day, 34, will be fined 20,000 rubles ($285) for obstructing pedestrians at an unauthorized protest and sentenced to 13 days of “administrative detention”
An American woman was arrested and fined by a Russian court today for parading a calf in Moscow’s Red Square, claiming she bought it to save it from slaughter, Russian state media reported.
Alicia Day, 34, will be fined 20,000 rubles ($285) for obstructing pedestrians at an unauthorized protest and was sentenced to 13 days of “administrative detention” on a separate charge of disobeying police orders.
“I bought the calf so it wouldn’t be eaten,” she said, according to Russian news agency TASS.
A video shared by state media shows Day explaining that she used a driver to bring the calf to Red Square by car. “I wanted to show the animal a beautiful place in our beautiful country,” Day said.
The US embassy did not immediately comment when asked about the case.
Day lives in a suburb of Moscow on a tourist visa, Russia’s RIA news agency reported, and has carried out similar acts of protest in the past in other countries.
In 2019, the Daily Mail reported that he “rescued” a pig he named Jixy Pixy from a slaughterhouse in the west of England, took it to London by taxi and took it for walks and to restaurant meals, but was forced to surrender it to an animal charity after the owner of the animal discovered that he was keeping it in a small apartment.
Here’s an unusual one: a Moscow court has sentenced US citizen Alicia Day to 13 days in jail for disobeying the police. The animal rights activist apparently bought a cow through the Avito marketplace and then decided to show it to Red Square. Um, okay. https://t.co/oAWXjQ0KO1 pic.twitter.com/5mDEByFd9u
