The New Year Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will take place with strict restrictions, due to the ongoing pandemic.
According to the organizers, the spectators will be limited to 1,000, who will be vaccinated or sick and, in addition, will have undergone a molecular diagnostic test for coronavirus, within 48 hours of the concert. Viewers are required to wear a FFP2 protective mask throughout their stay at the Friends of Music building in Vienna.
The restrictions are expected to affect about 700 people, who had already purchased tickets worth around 800 euros each, while the same restrictions will be applied to the other two traditional concerts, the general rehearsal of the New Year Concert on December 30 and the Evening Concert of the New Year, on December 31.
The President of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Daniel Frosauer, described the new measures as “a special logistical challenge, which requires a high degree of understanding and a willingness to adapt by all”, but welcomed the fact that, albeit with limitations, given the presence of an audience again. As he clarified, for those who had a ticket and will stay out of the room, seats will be automatically secured in next year’s Concerts. Last year, due to the restrictive measures that were in force at the same time, the Concert was held without an audience.
The most famous concert in the world, which is broadcast live from the “golden hall” of the Concert Hall of Music in more than 90 countries, will be conducted on January 1, 2022 for the third time by the famous conductor Daniel Barenboim, with works by Joseph Sprau Johann Strauss, Josef Helmesberger, Edward Strauss and Carl Michael Cheerer. The famous Vienna Concert Hall was built with a donation from the Greek-born businessman and patron of the arts, Nikolaos Doumpas, between 1863 and 1870.
