The government has declared a state of disaster in the regions of Biobio and Niublé – Dozens of fires still raging in the country

Dozens of fires still raging in Chilewho mourns four dead while at least 140,000 acres of forest have been reduced to ashes.

Interior Minister Carolina Toha announced that four people were killed in their vehicles in the city of Santa Juana de Biobio, about 500 kilometers south of Santiago. Two of them were trapped by the flames on a road while the other two died in a car accident as they tried to leave the area.

The government has declared a state of disaster the areas of Biobio and Niublé, where army forces have also been deployed to assist the firefighters.

“The conditions in the next few days will be dangerous,” the minister warned.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric interrupted his summer vacation to visit the affected areas, home to nearly 2 million people. The fires have brought traffic to a standstill on major highways and many communities have been evacuated.

The meteorological service predicts that the temperature will exceed 38 degrees Celsius today in the capital of Newble, Chiyan. Strong winds will also blow in the area, with the risk of worsening the situation.
