Three people died in the west Austria within 24 hours of avalanches hitting the area and authorities are warning residents and tourists of the dangers of unstable snow layers.

A representative of his police Tyrol told AFP that an “amateur winter sports enthusiast” was killed today in Kaltenbach, without elaborating on the circumstances of his death. According to the Austrian agency APA, it is a 17-year-old New Zealander who was skiing off-piste.

On Friday, a 32-year-old Chinese man died after going off the piste due to an avalanche at the Zelden ski resort.

Early this morning, another skier who had been missing since yesterday was found dead, buried in the snow, in the neighboring area of Foralberg. According to the APA, this is a man in his 50s.

In recent days, the risk of avalanches has increased in Tyrol and Voralberg due to strong winds and continuous snowfall. Civil protection services in these areas called on all winter sports enthusiasts to be extra careful, but raising the alert level to 4 (on the five-point scale) did not stop many adventurous tourists from going off-piste. Many rescue operations were also organized today, under difficult conditions.

The February school holidays have started in Vienna and the ski resorts are full, after a period of withering, mainly because at the beginning of the season, due to the good weather, there was no snow at low and medium altitude.

Two dead in Switzerland

Two other off-piste skiers were killed by an avalanche in the canton of Grisons in southeastern Switzerland. According to local police, a third member of the group was also swept away by the avalanche but escaped unhurt.

The two victims were a 56-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man.

The rescue operation was suspended for a while and resumed in the early afternoon due to poor weather conditions in the area and very limited visibility.
