Tourists from New Zealand, China and Germany are among the dead.

Ten people were killed when avalanches hit the region in the Austrian and Swiss Alps over the weekend.

Tourists from New Zealand, China and Germany are among the dead at various ski resorts.

Austrian authorities have issued a level four avalanche alert – the second highest – after heavy snowfall and winds hit the region.

Despite warnings, ski resorts in western Austria have been packed due to school holidays in Vienna.

Avalanches are common in both countries. According to the Austrian news agency APA, 30 avalanches were reported in the Tyrol region on Saturday alone.

Austria’s alert level four means “very large avalanches are possible” – and advises novice skiers to stay on open slopes and ski trails and experienced skiers to stay away from very steep terrain.
